Macedonian Language
Macedonian is an Indo-European language from the family of Slavic languages belonging to the South-Slavic group. At the same time, it is a Balkan language. It is interesting to mention that there are instances in the world when two or more nations have a common language, and vice versa, when some nations have two languages. The Macedonian nation, however, is in this respect like the majority of nations in the world - its members have a separate language. This fact creates a feeling of independence in every member of the Macedonian nation and represents a significant contribution in the construction of Macedonian national consciousness.

The historical development of the Macedonian language dates back to the 9th century AD when Slavonic literacy began with a standard Macedonian language. The modern codification of the Macedonian literary language was as late as 1944, although from the 1860s onwards, attempts were made at creating a general Macedonian literary standard.

Malta Language
Malta has two official languages, Maltese and English. The English language is a leftover of about 160 years of British colonisation of Malta. Maltese, whose closest languages are Maghrebi Arabic, Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian, is the only Semitic language which is written in Roman alphabet. Italian, too, is widely spoken among the younger generation, particularly due to the television programs which are transmitted from nearby Italy. If you don't speak Maltese and are willing to spend sometime with our Survival Maltese you'll find that the Maltese language is interesting enough to make a little effort very worthwhile.

Maltese Language
This commentary is based on research, however, it should not be taken as the ultimate, authoritative theory on the origins of the Maltese language.

Reference material is provided in the numerated 'Notes' linked via hypertext and it is strongly suggested that you read an entire sentence, if not the paragraph, before clicking to the relevant Note (and back) so as not to lose sight of the context.

? ? ? A note of caution: ? ? ? Many could profess to be more scholarly on the subject and, indeed, some may even argue against certain aspects of this commentary. ? But, in all fairness, this may also be said of all historical theories since the so-called, long-held 'truths' of yesteryear are today being challenged and disproven 1 by findings, at times, even coming from other, independent disciplines.

Such intriguiging findings 2 have, in fact, shed new light where Malta's native tongue is concerned, stirring different hypotheses about its origins, although at this present time most local and international scholars, by and large, appear to agree on a central idea.

Maasai people
Kenya's most well-known ethnic tribe, the Maasai (or Masai) are semi-nomadic people located primarily in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are considered to be part of the Nilotic family of African tribal groups, just as the Scilluk from Sudan and the Acholi from Uganda.

The Maasai probably migrated from the Nile valley in Ethiopia and Sudan to Maasailand (central and south-western Kenya and northern Tanzania) sometime around 1600 AD, along the route of lakes Chew Bahir and Turkana (ex Rudolph), bringing their domesticated cattle with them.

Once considered fierce warriors, feared by all tribes in the zone, the Maasai lost most of their power during the late XIX century, as a consequence of a string of natural and historic calamities. They were hit by drought, smallpox, and cattle pest, and contemporarily had to mourn the departure of Laibon Mbatiani, their respected and much admired leader, direct descendant of the mythical OlMasinta, founder of the tribe.

Macedonian Synonyms and Dictionary Resources
The adjective Macedonian (in Bulgarian: македонски; in Greek: , in Albanian: maqedonas) was out ot use as a glossonym prior to 1944. Until then, Macedonian used to be an adjective (designating the region (toponym) of Macedonia).[5] So-ever since 1944 it has scarcely been clear whether the toponym or the glossonym is actually meant under the word Macedonian, which caused a confusion of notions (deliberately provoked, too), that worked in favour of the reinforcement of the myths of the Macedonian nation. The impression was created as if this same language since time immemorial, has been the language of the "country" Macedonia. Alexander the Great was Macedonian. Cyril and Methodius were Macedonians, and Kemal Ataturk too, was Macedonian (a fact which is often suppressed). Neither of those however, had anything in common with the Macedonian literary language of Mr. Blaze Koneski (i.e. Blagoj Konev). And for the delusion to be complete, the textbooks in history and geography read: "In the Socialist Republic of Macedonia there live Macedonians, Albanians, Turks etc." This downright usurpation of ethnic names seems the right tool of forcible differentiation (compare: the French, Bretons, Basques - all of them nationals of France) etc., instead of the French French, the Breton French, the Basque French or (given the common territory of a nation), the French Bretons, the French Basques etc. It would be right to say: the Bulgarian Macedonians, the Albanian Macedonians, the Turkish Macedonians etc. (in this case, the residents of the republic of Macedonia), or, as it had been generally accepted to say by 1944 (e.g. Veigand) - the Macedonian Bulgarians, Macedonian Albanians, Macedonian Turks, etc. (given the common territory of a nation). And, since through the new Macedonian language, erstwhile Bulgarian ceased to exist officially (!), that is, it became a (strongly estranged) foreign language, the glossonym and the ethnonym Bulgarian disappeared too.

Macedonian Lingua Directory Resources
When speaking about Macedonia, one should bear in mind the fact that the language of the Macedonians gave the first literary language. The old language was for a long period of time the common language of all the Southern, the Eastern and part of the Western people.
From the ninth up to the nineteenth century hundreds of written works (most of them preserved) were created on Macedonian soil. They give proof of the culture and literacy which existed for almost a millennium, representing the Macedonian people as a nation with a high degree of culture, was marked both in Macedonian literature and world civilization.
The most brilliant traces of this rich cultural tradition, born on Macedonian soil are the alphabets - Glagolitic and Cyrillic. When speaking about Macedonia we should not judge it as a country that has only just started on the path to a civilized society, but must consider it as an old civilization and culture, which was pushed back and now has the possibility of developing once again.

Madurese Language Summary
The Madurese originate from the 5,304 square kilometer island of Madura, which is part of Indonesia's East Java province. There are about 10 million Madurese, making them the third-largest ethnic group in Indonesia after the Javanese and the Sundanese. However, more than half of the Madurese have moved to other parts of Indonesia, particularly to mainland East Java, where they have integrated with the Javanese. The harsh, arid, and unfertile land of the island of Madura, which can only be used during the rainy season, causes the migration of the Madurese to other areas. Reports show that by 1994, only about 3 million people were left in Madura. Many have also transmigrated to areas such as Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.

Madurese migrants in Indonesian cities are easily identified because they stay exclusively in their own areas, maintaining their language and customs. The Madurese are Muslims and are notable in their adherence to their religious leaders or kiyai (Islamic clerics), who also become their informal political and social leaders. The kiyai have an elevated status for Madurese. The fanatical supporters from East Java province of Indonesia's former cleric president, Abdurrahman Wahid, counted Madurese in their numbers.

Madurese men are protective of their women, and should their wife or girlfriend suffer an offense from another man, then the Madurese man must settle it by carok (a life and death duel) using a clurit (a 30- to 40-centimeter half-circle knife). Madurese men must master carok as a martial art. Those who fully master this martial art are called orang jago and given blater (brave man) status. Traditional music and dances (remo) are regularly held in Madurese society to formally honor members of the blater group.

Migrant Madurese are usually small traders. In west and central Kalimantan, their presence has created difficult relations with the local people such as the Dayak, Malay, and Chinese. There have been a number of pogroms against the Madurese, including the brutal killings in 2001 in which thousands were beheaded in Central Kalimantan province after local Dayak people accused the Madurese of taking their land and of denigrating local customs and cultures.

Madurese Language and Culture
While other ethnic groups have assimilated into Indonesian society, the Madurese remain a culturally distinct society. The third largest ethnic group in Indonesia, the Madurese are staunchly resistant to change and outside influence. Over the centuries, they have shown their ability to adjust to any outside influence and maintain their specific identity. The majority of the Madurese (nine million) live on Java near the island of Madura, with four million still inhabiting Madura.Madurese tend to be short, have dark-brown skin, curly hair and are rough in appearance.

Family is important to the Madurese. Working as farmers or fishermen, they live in villages that function around a religious center.Islam is an integral part of the social, political and economic life of these people.Although the Madurese people are orthodox Sunni Muslims in many ways, there is much folk Islam which focuses on seeking protection in life through the magic of either appeasing or controlling good and bad spirits. They have a strong belief in spirits, the use of amulets, black and white magic and the worship of ancestors.

Maasai Language
Altogether, the traditional Maasai lifestyle is under pressure to change rapidly. As socio-cultural changes occur, the language is also facing the probability of considerable change. To help document the language and Maasai culture (both traditional and modern), we are working on cross-dialect lexicographic (dictionary) and text data bases of the Maa (Maasai) language. The lexicography data base currently includes over 3,000 entries. Funding permitting, we plan to include a minimum of three dialects and about 5,000 entries.

Maasai language
The Maasai speak Maa, a Nilotic language that originates from the Nile region. Nilotic simply means ‘of the Nile’. Maasai translates as ‘one who speaks the Maa language.’

Few other peoples speak or incorporate Maa in their own tongue including the Ndorobo, Njemps, Mukugodo, Rendille, Samburu, Arusha, Baraguyu, Parakuyu, Sonjo and those Elmolo who live on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. However it is the Maasai who originally spoke Maa.

The Maa language can now be found in written form, although the process of properly documenting it are in the early stages.

There is a Maa/English dictionary which is sold in East Africa by Frans Mol (Dutch missionary) called Maasai Language & Culture Dictionary, published in 1996.

There is also a Bible and a few other publications in Maa.

Maasai school children have classes in Maa but learn the National languages of Swahili and English
