We, the Directors and families, are always in residence throughout the summer to ensure that all students receive the high standard of personal care and attention that parents appreciate.

Our family presence creates an ambiance that reassures and comforts those who may be away from home for the first time. With our warm family presence and the safe location of Hurst College, parents are assured that their children are well-looked after and will thoroughly benefit from their stay with Manor Courses.

Manor Courses Ltd, established in 1970, organises Residential English Summer Schools for young foreign students and has always been a family-run business. It has spanned 3 generations. Mrs. Jacky Barnard (pictured on the right) is the current Director of the organisation and also the daughter of the founder Mrs. Ilva Smith. Despite her very English surname, Mrs. Smith is Italian and married an Englishman in Venice in 1942.

Jacky has two sons and a daughter; Nick (pictured center), Jon (pictured left) and Su. While the family lived overseas for a large part of their formative years they spent summers at their Grandmother's summer school. Growing up with different nationalities in the sympathetic and caring environment that their Grandmother formulated for young foreign students, has given them a wealth of experience in this field.

In 1993, when Mrs. Smith retired, Nick became Assistant Director. Nick is now The Managing Director and resposible for sales and marketing. Nick's wife Katy and his two children spend much of their summers at the school, and are part of the family atmosphere. Nck ensures we have a great mix of nationalities coming from all over the world and works closely with the management at Hurst College.

Jon has been the Course Director for 5 years now, graduating with a Diploma in TESOL when he started his 4 years teaching in Brighton. Before that he spent 5 years as a qualified teacher in Japan and Taiwan. He is a member of IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and QuiTE (Quality in TESOL Education).

Su qualified with a BA in Hospitality Management is a perfect Hospitality & Education Consultant, not working in the office with us until summer arrives. She moved into teaching first as a qualified EFL teacher in Spain and then took a PGCE. She currently works as a Primary School teacher in London, but assists us during the summer course.

During the summer Jacky, Nick and Jon are always in residence at the summer school. This allows for them to provide the genuine warm family atmosphere and lend their experience and expertise as part of the management team.
