Teaching language with the aid of computers has become more common in the last few decades. This online Icelandic course aims to create an interesting, entertaining and useful learning environment that utilizes the latest theories in the pedagogy of languages and the best technology available.

Icelandic Online 1 is a self-instructive course for beginners. The course is free and open to all.

The beginner's course is a directed introductory course intended to provide basic knowledge in the Icelandic language. The material is divided into two themes both of which are divided into six units, each unit has five lessons and each lesson has three pages. There are over 900 learning objects in the course.

It takes approximately 45 hours to go through the course.

Welcome to Ìgbo World ! We will begin our study of the language with a brief introduction. As you probably know already, Ìgbo is one of the major African languages. Although it is spoken predominantly in Biafra (former Eastern Nigeria), it is widely spoken in almost all the countries of this world by the Ìgbo Diaspora. If you are an Ìgbo, it is important that you learn to speak, read, and write Ìgbo because the language of a people is their most important heritage on which the survival of their culture and their continued existence on earth as a people largely depend. If you are a foreigner (a tourist, a friend of the Ìgbo Nation, etc.), we thank you sincerely for your interest in our language, our culture, and our people. A knowledge of the Ìgbo Language will, amongst other things, give you the key to the heart of the Ìgbo people (Ńdị Ìgbo). In fact, it will enable you to understand why the Igbos are unique in Africa, why they are hated and admired by their erstwhile colonial masters and detractors, and, above all, why they are wanted and unwanted in the Nigeria they call their country. That said, let us begin our study of the language with a look at the writing or orthographic system.

Have you notice how the Igbo Language is fast deteriorating in our schools, markets, public places, business sectors, and even in the homes, as if no one speaks the language anymore?

This is indeed sad, knowing fully well that a people's language is their major identity. But let me ask you: Do you think it is necessary for children born abroad to learn and speak their parents' original language?

You see, many Igbo children, especially those living abroad, or more specifically; children whose parents are of the Igbo stock, cannot speak the language.

Why is this? Why are many Nigerian parents with dual-nationality usually reluctant to teach their children our languages? They forget the importance of teaching their children our native languages in a foreign land.

Igbo is one of the three major languages of Nigeria, the others being Yoruba and Hausa. Native speakers of Igbo, estimated to be between 30 and 40 million people, reside predominantly in Eastern Nigeria.


Igbo belongs to the Niger-Congo language family. Greenberg (1963) classified it in the Kwa group along with six other big clusters: Akan, Gbe, Yoruba-Igala, Nupe-Ebira, Edo and Idoma. Williamson has since redrawn this picture, reducing the Kwa sub-group to Akan and Gbe. The rest she reclassified as an enlarged Benue-Congo group.

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation made up of 13,667 islands strung along the equator between Sumatra in the west and New Guinea in the east. Its geographical vastness makes it one of the largest countries in the world, while its diverse and teeming population of over 210 million makes it the fourth most populous. The ethnic diversity of this nation is even more astounding than its sheer size: more than 250 distinct ethnic groups, speaking mutually unintelligible languages, make up its heterogeneous population. The Javanese are the largest of the Indonesian ethnic groups, accounting for about half of the nation's population. By contrast, there are numerous groups in Papua Barat and elsewhere in eastern Indonesia that count their populations in the low thousands, or even hundreds.One of the powerful binding elements that creates "Unity in Diversity" (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) among the diverse Indonesian peoples is the national language, Indonesian. A dialect of Malay, this language was established in the early days of the nationalist movement as a tool to help create national identity - Indonesian identity

For those non-speakers of Indonesian not living and working in Indonesia and who would like to learn the basics of the language this course, from Rosetta Stone, the leaders in language learning software and homeschooling, may be useful. The program apparently uses a step-by-step method of carefully structured lessons, called “Dynamic Immersion”. Sounds impressive.

Commencing in 2005 Indonesian will be taught on four Monash campuses: Clayton (all levels), Berwick (Beginners and Intermediate/Post VCE) and Caulfield (Beginners and Special Purposes: Translation), Gippsland (Intermediate/Post VCE and Advanced). In addition to this on-campus study students may also elect to study in-country or via off-campus learning (distance). Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia) course, Puri Indonesian Language Plus in April 1995. In a homelike atmosphere we welcomed every student to be part of our Indonesian family, accompanied them to practice Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia) and touch the culture. Puri (literally means a palace) referred to a beautiful house whose homelike atmosphere accommodated the language learning process in family hospitality.

The ‘house’ has rapidly developed into a real “education center” since then. We have become a multi language center where foreigners can learn Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia) as well as its culture and local language in the homelike atmosphere, and where Indonesian nationals can learn foreign languages in the same atmosphere. We are moving fast with our business which is not just limited to the language training but culture and traveling. We have a new soul, a new spirit for the new challenge. Galang Budaya – Center of Indonesian Culture Studies- helps people understand Indonesian language and culture deeply. Galang Budaya is located in Yogyakarta (Jogjakarta), which is well known as the city of students and also as the second tourist destination in Indonesia. In addition, it also has a stable security condition that gives visitors comfort feeling during their visit to Yogyakarta.

ICC has been directed to develop a language commission in order to strengthen unity among Inuit of the circumpolar region and to ensure the endurance and growth of Inuit culture and societies for both the present and future generations. Among other goals, the Commission will act as a forum for Inuit to preserve and promote the use of Inuit languages, and will develop recommendations regarding the development of a common Inuit writing system.

UNIVERSITY OF THE ARCTIC
ICC has been mandated to work through the Arctic Council in the establishment of a University of the Arctic bearing in mind the array of other circumpocircumpolar education initiatives already in progress. ICC has been mandated to ensure that the consultation process be very broad and that community level and higher education institutions already established in the Arctic be an integral part of the planning.

(UNIX) You should also change the font size to one that is easy / comfortable to read, using the preferences menu. I find medium size the best.

Note: The spellings and pronunciations used by Aideen are based in her own natural use of Connemara Irish but they have been kept simple, so as to be readily understood in any part of Ireland where there are differences in the language.
For example, the word 'feicfidh' is used only in Connemara Irish; in Leinster, Ulster and Munster the word is 'cífidh'. There are two pronunciations; Leinster/Munster - kee-fee; Ulster - chee-fee.

Ibibio is a Cross River language spoken by 1,5 to 2 million Ibibio in the Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Because of its importance in trade and education in the region, many Annang and Efik people also speak Ibibio. Ibibio is a member of the Benue-Congo group, which forms part of the Niger-Congo language family. It is closely related to Efik.

Icelandic is a North Germanic language, the official language of Iceland and the mother tongue of the Icelandic people. Its closest relative is Faroese and can be somewhat understood by a small number of Norwegians as well, depending on their dialect and education.

Igbo is a language spoken in Nigeria by around 18 million speakers[citation needed] (the Igbo), especially in the southeastern region once identified as Biafra. The language was used by John Goldsmith as an example to justify deviating from the classical linear model of phonology as laid out in The Sound Pattern of English. It is written in the Roman script. Igbo is a tonal language, like Yoruba and Chinese.

Ilokano is the third most-spoken language of the Republic of the Philippines.Being an Austronesian language, it is related to such languages as Indonesian, Malay, Fijian, Maori, Hawaiian, Malagasy, Samoan, Tahitian,Chamorro, Tetum, and Paiwan

Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia. Indonesian is a standardized dialect of the Malay language that was officially defined with the declaration of Indonesian independence in 1945, and the two languages remain quite similar.

Inuit language is traditionally spoken across the North American Arctic and to some extent in the subarctic in Labrador. It was also to some degree spoken in far eastern Russia, particularly the Diomede Islands, but is almost certainly extinct in Russia today. The Inuit live primarily in three countries: Greenland, Canada, and the U.S. state of Alaska

Ingush is a language spoken by approximately 415,000 people, known as the Ingush, across a region covering Ingushetia, Chechnya, Uzbekistan and Russia

Inuktitut is the name of the varieties of Inuit language spoken in Canada. It is spoken in all areas north of the tree-line, including parts of the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, to some extent in northeastern Manitoba as well as the territories of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and traditionally on the Arctic Ocean coast of Yukon

Irish, a Goidelic language spoken in Ireland, is constitutionally recognised as the first official language of the Republic of Ireland, an official language of the European Union, and has official recognition in Northern Ireland as well.

Italian is a Romance language spoken by about 70 million people, primarily in Italy. Standard Italian was strongly influenced by the Tuscan dialect and is somewhat intermediate between Italo-Dalmatian languages of the South and Gallo-Italian languages of the North.
