Esperanto is a language that was developed in 1887 by Ludwik Zamenhof with the specific intent of creating an international second language. In 1905, Zamenhof published his Fundamento de Esperanto, which lays down the basic principles of the language's structure and formation.
Esperanto is probably the most successful of the artificial international languages. The number of Esperanto speakers is estimated at more than 2 million. The Universala Esperanto-Asocio (founded in 1908) has members in 83 countries, and there are 50 national Esperanto associations that use Esperanto. There is an annual World Esperanto Congress, and over 100 periodicals are published in the language. More than 30,000 books have been published in Esperanto

Estonian is spoken by about 1.1 million people worldwide, around 950,000 of whom live in Estonia itself.

It is a member of the Finno-Ugric language family, being closely related to Finnish and more distantly so to Hungarian. It's not an Indo-European language such as French or Spanish, and as a result the vast majority of words in Estonian will look thoroughly unfamiliar to someone whose mother tongue is English.

Enets is a Samoyedic language spoken by the Enets people along the lower Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The ever increasing exercise library includes sections on grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking, listening, pronunciation and writing, as well as special sections for IELTS, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEFL, TOEIC, English for Special purposes (business English) and English for Academic Purposes.

Born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1758, Noah Webster came of age during the American Revolution and was a strong advocate of the Constitutional Convention. He believed fervently in the developing cultural independence of the United States, a chief part of which was to be a distinctive American language with its own idiom, pronunciation, and style.

In 1806 Webster published A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, the first truly American dictionary. For more information on this milestone in American reference publishing, please see Noah Webster’s Spelling Reform and A Sample Glossary from A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. Immediately thereafter he went to work on his magnum opus, An American Dictionary of the English Language, for which he learned 26 languages, including Anglo-Saxon and Sanskrit, in order to research the origins of his own country's tongue. This book, published in 1828, embodied a new standard of lexicography; it was a dictionary with 70,000 entries that was felt by many to have surpassed Samuel Johnson's 1755 British masterpiece not only in scope but in authority as well.

One facet of Webster's importance was his willingness to innovate when he thought innovation meant improvement. He was the first to document distinctively American vocabulary such as skunk, hickory, and chowder. Reasoning that many spelling conventions were artificial and needlessly confusing, he urged altering many words: musick to music, centre to center, and plough to plow, for example. (Other attempts at reform met with less acceptance, however, such as his support for modifying tongue to tung and women to wimmen—the latter of which he argued was "the old and true spelling" and the one that most accurately indicated its pronunciation.)

While Webster was promoting his dictionary, George and Charles Merriam opened a printing and bookselling operation in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1831. G. & C. Merriam Co. (renamed Merriam-Webster Inc. in 1982) inherited the Webster legacy when the Merriam brothers bought the unsold copies of the 1841 edition of An American Dictionary of the English Language, Corrected and Enlarged from Webster's heirs after the great man's death in 1843. At the same time they secured the rights to create revised editions of that work. It was the beginning of a publishing tradition that has continued uninterrupted to this day at Merriam-Webster.

This website is being created by full-time, part-time and postgraduate students of WSL (College of Foreign Languages) in Czestochowa, Poland.

It began as an internal project aiming to create interactive quizzes to be used by students of WSL and CEL-SJO, our affiliated language school. A few months into the project, however, we decided to share the quizzes we have created with the outside world - and here they are.

The International Learning Center (ILC) is a private educational enterprise,established in 1993 and registered with the Ministry of Justice. The purpose of the ILC

The ILC English Language Program offers courses at six levels in which adults from various professions learn to speak conversational English from native speakers. The ILC invites American and European professionals to the Republic of Azerbaijan to offer seminars on a variety of topics at our own Center, and in the various faculties of local universities and institutes. Past topics have included: general economics, business management, ophthalmology, and psychology; while future seminar opportunities continue to be explored.

In addition to our educational endeavors, our Center has a strong interest in culture and the arts. In cooperation with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Culture, the ILC has promoted cultural awareness and understanding by hosting music groups from America to perform throughout the country. These and other cultural initiatives have always been well received and applauded by the Azerbaijani people. Our center offers lessons in Azerbaijani folk dancing, as well as organized presentations on the history of American popular music for Azerbaijanis, and lectures on understanding Azerbaijani culture and values for foreign nationals. In all of these cultural activities we seek to bring together the best from both Azerbaijan and abroad in order to enrich both foreigners and nationals living in Azerbaijan.

Over the years the ILC and its staff have been active in many kinds of humanitarian service, usually in partnership with other organizations. Most recently, our center has offered English courses in the SOS Children's Village, and in the #3 orphanage in the Khatai district of Baku. We have also promoted primary health care through instruction in basic dental hygiene, and helped coordinate construction projects in the Lankaran orphanage, with the funding of the International Women's Club.

Since its launch on 21 April 2000, englishteaching.co.uk (aka fretweb) has become one of the UK's premiere online resources for Teachers of English Language and Literature at secondary level.



englishteaching.co.uk provides and publishes editable and printable teaching resources, worksheets, lesson plans and schemes of work. All materials are developed and produced by practising subject specialists and, as an online resource, englishteaching.co.uk's collection of materials is ever-expanding.



As a busy, practising teacher, Chantel Mathias, (the site's founder and editor), realised the potential of the Internet in creating an online cooperative for busy classroom teachers. Teaching colleagues throughout the UK similarly realised this potential and the sharing and cooperation was huge. It is this same sprit of sharing and professionalism that remains central to our subscription-based site and the pioneering £ARN + LEARN scheme today.



From April 2000 to December 2001, the site was designed, maintained, funded and edited solely by Chantel Mathias but the idea behind FRETWEB steadily came to fruition thanks to the excellent teaching resources, lesson plans and schemes of work submitted for publication by FRETWEB's generous contributors.



As of January 2002, access to FRETWEB's Secure Site was by subscription. At the same time, FRETWEB's new and exciting £ARN + LEARN scheme was launched. Our ethos of sharing remains central to this scheme: teachers produce and share their resources and talents and we share the site's subscription income in the form of a no nonsense, upfront fee.



Maintaining its status as an efficient, small business, Claire Rees (Admin) joined englishteaching.co.uk in March 2005 as the site's first employee. She is supported by FRETWEB's wonderful editors and by our site's talented teacher authors and contributors.

Her students have participated in The National French Contest and have won numerous awards including First Place in Nassau County, First Place Regional, and First Place National since 1991.

The Institute for Research in English Acquisition and Development (READ) has helped complete the first comprehensive report on the actual costs of educating America’s growing number of limited-English students. “In estimating their costs in light of new census data, school districts in Arizona and around the country will now have a reliable estimate of how much it costs to educate limited-English children,” said Linda Chavez, President of the Center for Equal Opportunity, the parent organization for READ.

The report focuses mostly on Structured English Immersion and Bilingual Education programs in Arizona but has national implications. Over 150 schools and school districts were evaluated and found to spend various amounts of additional funds to educate limited-English students. On a per pupil basis, schools were found to spend from zero to an extra $4,600, with an estimated average cost of about $1,200 per student. The report also found no correlation between student performance on standardized tests and the cost of the program implemented.
