Nearly all our teachers, outside July and August, have been teaching at St Brelade's College for more than five years and have been selected from our Teacher Training Courses, which we run every year to prepare teachers for Trinity College Certificate and Diploma examinations. This means that our teachers are used to working together and share the same teaching goals.

The main emphasis of our teaching is on communication. Like most modern language schools, we employ a variety of methods and teaching materials to help students increase their conversational fluency. Mrs. Jacky Barnard (pictured on the right) is the current Director of the organisation and also the daughter of the founder Mrs. Ilva Smith. Despite her very English surname, Mrs. Smith is Italian and married an Englishman in Venice in 1942.

Jacky has two sons and a daughter; Nick (pictured center), Jon (pictured left) and Su. While the family lived overseas for a large part of their formative years they spent summers at their Grandmother's summer school. Growing up with different nationalities in the sympathetic and caring environment that their Grandmother formulated for young foreign students, has given them a wealth of experience in this field.

In 1993, when Mrs. Smith retired, Nick became Assistant Director. Nick is now The Managing Director and resposible for sales and marketing. Nick's wife Katy and his two children spend much of their summers at the school, and are part of the family atmosphere. Nck ensures we have a great mix of nationalities coming from all over the world and works closely with the management at Hurst College.

Jon has been the Course Director for 5 years now, graduating with a Diploma in TESOL when he started his 4 years teaching in Brighton. Before that he spent 5 years as a qualified teacher in Japan and Taiwan. He is a member of IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and QuiTE (Quality in TESOL Education).

Su qualified with a BA in Hospitality Management is a perfect Hospitality & Education Consultant, not working in the office with us until summer arrives. She moved into teaching first as a qualified EFL teacher in Spain and then took a PGCE. She currently works as a Primary School teacher in London, but assists us during the summer course.

During the summer Jacky, Nick and Jon are always in residence at the summer school. This allows for them to provide the genuine warm family atmosphere and lend their experience and expertise as part of the management team.

Taunton International Study Centre (TISC) we aim to meet students’ individual needs and to prepare them academically, socially and pastorally for their next school. Our students are part of the Taunton School community and are able to enjoy all of the school’s excellent facilities.

Academically, students are placed into classes according to their English and Mathematics ability and they study a full curriculum of subjects, with lessons six days a week. Windsor English Language Centre offers intensive courses in English for adult foreign learners throughout the year. There are two types of course: the Small Group Course and Private Courses.

The SMALL GROUP COURSE is suitable for students whose English level is Early-Advanced / good Upper-Intermediate. The maximum class size is 4 so students receive a high degree of personal attention. The minimum age is 18.

The Small Group Course is Full-Time, 15 hours attendance per week, and takes place in the mornings, Monday to Friday, 09.30-12.30. In addition, homework occupies about 2 hours daily.

New Students may join the Small Group Course at the beginning of ANY WEEK. It is possible to enrol for any number of weeks (minimum 2). A Test is available on the website to check that the level is suitable.

PRIVATE COURSES are available at Intermediate level or higher. Lessons concentrate on the areas of language that are most important for the student. Private courses are in the evenings, Monday to Friday. The minimum lesson is 90 minutes.

The courses take place in Datchet, which is on the River Thames next to Windsor. Datchet Station is 5 minutes by train from Windsor Riverside Station.

Students may enter for a Cambridge University Examination in English: for example, the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), taken in March, June or December; or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), which is available all the year.

If required, ACCOMMODATION can be arranged with LOCAL HOSTS. Hosts provide all meals (except lunch Monday to Friday).

Totnes School of English was founded as a business partnership of five teachers in 1980 and has been accredited by the British Council since 1985. Although the composition of the partnership has changed over the years, the school has continued to be run by teachers and is now jointly owned by Margie Barker and Clare Vickers, both of whom have teaching backgrounds. Camp Beaumont’s “English In Action” courses lead the field, appealing to young learners from all over the world. We give students the opportunity to improve their English language proficiency, Information Technology and study skills in a vibrant English speaking environment, where UK children also go for their holidays.

Active learning
English in Action is about learning actively, sometimes in teams, sometimes with a classmate and sometimes as an individual. Aided by the most innovative written publications, audio-visual materials and English language IT programmes, students carry out tasks which will improve their abilities in the four key areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. These graded tasks deal with universal topics such as the environment, entertainment, healthy living or sport and can include taking part in a discussion, planning and presenting a publicity campaign, researching and then describing an important local or international issue or carrying out a survey. There are also games and competitions too! Students act out everyday situations such as going shopping or even dramatic self-produced sketches, which are recorded and stored for future enjoyment.

Another important element of Camp Beaumont’s courses is the element of study skills provided. Students are encouraged to think about how they organise their studies so they can learn more quickly and efficiently. They learn how to note down, categorise and store new information, making it easier to remember and review. English classes are available at all levels from Beginner to Advanced and Proficiency, including the increasingly popular IELTS courses. The emphasis is on encouraging students to speak fluently as well as enabling them to achieve good levels of comprehension, writing and grammar.

Courses are devised on a modular basis so that part-time students can choose to study the particular language skills that they require, whereas full-time students (studying 15 hours per week) build up a comprehensive package covering all areas of language development. This flexibility is particularly valuable for students who already have some grasp of the English Language, but need help with specific skills, for example, pronunciation. Students may choose the length of their course from 1 month to 1 Academic Year with shorter summer programmes available in June, July and August.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses prepare students for all levels of the University of Cambridge ESOL examinations, and the College is a centre for KET and PET examinations. South Chelsea College belongs to the Association of British Language Schools (ABLS).
